SWS: 51% of adult Filipinos are confident on government’s evaluation of Covid-19 vaccines

As the Philippines enters its third month of Covid-19 vaccine program, the nationwide April 28–May 2, 2021 Social Weather Survey found 51% of adult Filipinos confident (18% very confident, 34% somewhat confident, correctly rounded), 31% uncertain, and 17% not confident (12% somewhat not confident, 5% not at all confident) about the government’s evaluation of the Covid-19 vaccines.

Willingness for vaccination is 1/3 Yes, 1/3 Unsure, and 1/3 No

The May 2021 survey also asked, “If you have a chance to be given a free vaccine that can prevent Covid-19 which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration or FDA, would you… Surely get vaccinated; Probably get vaccinated; Be unsure about getting vaccinated; Probably not get vaccinated; Surely not get vaccinated? (Kung may pagkakataon kayong bigyan ng libreng bakuna na makakapigil sa Covid-19 na aprubado ng Food and Drug Administration o FDA, kayo ba ay… Siguradong magpapabakuna; Malamang na magpapabakuna; Hindi tiyak kung magpapabakuna o hindi; Malamang hindi magpapabakuna; Siguradong hindi magpapabakuna?)”

To this, 32% say they are willing (consisting of 23% surely and 9% probably), 35% are uncertain about it, and 33% are unwilling (consisting of 7% probably not and 26% surely not) to get vaccinated.

The percentage of those willing (surely or probably) to get vaccinated is 58% among those very confident, versus 38% among those somewhat confident, 18% among those of uncertain confidence, 20% among those somewhat not confident, and 11% among those not at all confident, about the government’s evaluation of the vaccines.

Fear of side effects is the top reason for being uncertain and unwilling about vaccination

Among those who are uncertain about getting vaccinated, 39% cited reasons related to I’m afraid of the possible side effects, followed by 21% It’s not safe and effective, 11% I might die/I heard reports of fatality, 11% I’m afraid/I don’t trust the vaccine, and 11% I have comorbidity/I’m too old.

Obtaining single-digit scores are reasons related to I heard negative feedback about the vaccines (6%), I might get sick/I might get Covid-19 (3%), I’m healthy/I’m not sick (2%), and I just don’t like/need it (1%). The rest gave other reasons (1%) or did not answer (1%).

Among those who are unwilling to be vaccinated (% who will probably not/surely not get the Covid-19 vaccine), 30% gave reasons related to I’m afraid of the possible side effects, followed by 20% I might die/I heard reports of fatality, 17% I have comorbidity/I’m too old, and 11% I might get sick/I might get Covid-19.

Other reasons for being unwilling to be vaccinated are related to It’s not safe and effective (9%), I’m afraid/I don’t trust the vaccine (9%), I don’t like/need it (8%), I’m healthy/I’m not sick (3%), I don’t believe in Covid-19 (1%), and others (2%).
