SWS: 49% of adult Filipinos got worse off in past 12 months

The national Social Weather Survey of June 23-26, 2021 found 49% of adult Filipinos saying their quality-of-life got worse (termed by SWS as “Losers”), 18% saying it got better (“Gainers”), and 33% saying it was the same (“Unchanged”), compared to a year ago.

The resulting Net Gainers score is -31 (% Gainers minus % Losers), classified by SWS as very low (-39 to -30).

The June 2021 Net Gainer score is 7 points up from the very low -38 in May 2021, continuing the recovery from the catastrophic levels of -78 in May 2020, -72 in July 2020, and -76 in September 2020.

The survey question on the respondents’ assessment of their change in quality-of-life in the past 12 months has been fielded 141 times since April 1983.

Net Gainers eases to very low in Metro Manila and low in Balance Luzon, but worsens to extremely low in the Visayas and very low in Mindanao

Compared to May 2021, Net Gainers eased from catastrophic to very low in Metro Manila, up by 20 points from -50 to -30.

It eased from extremely low to very low in Balance Luzon, up by 15 points from -42 to -27.

However, it worsened from very low to extremely low in the Visayas, down by 2 points from -38 to -40.

It worsened from low to very low in Mindanao, down by 6 points from -25 to -31.

Net Gainers eased from extremely low to very low among elementary graduates; stays very low among other education levels

Compared to May 2021, Net Gainers eased from extremely low to very low among elementary graduates, up by 11 points from -42 to -31.

It rose by 7 points but stayed very low among junior high school graduates, from -37 to -30.

It rose by 8 points but stayed very low among college graduates, from -38 to -30.

It stayed at very low -37 among non-elementary graduates.

Net Personal Optimism is higher among Gainers than Losers

The June 2021 survey found 37% of adult Filipinos saying their quality-of-life will improve (termed by SWS as “Optimists”), 7% saying it will worsen (“Pessimists”), and 42% saying it will stay the same (“No Change”), in the next 12 months (“Second Quarter 2021 Social Weather Survey: 37% of adult Filipinos say their Quality-of-Life will improve in the next 12 months,” 23 July 2021, www.sws.org.ph).

Net Personal Optimism (% Optimists minus % Pessimists) is higher among Gainers (excellent +50) than among the Unchanged (very high +30)  and Losers (high +23).
