Baguio City, also known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines, served as the provincial capital from 1901 to 1916 but has since been independent after being converted to a chartered city.

Today the city is the centre of business and commerce in northern Luzon, bringing in millions of visitors each year due to its cool temperatures and beautiful parks.

The city was originally established as a hill station by American troops in 1900 – it was constructed on the site of an Ibaloi village known as Kafagway, an Ibaloi word for ‘moss.’

The city is situated at an altitude of just over 5,000 feet above sea level, giving it the perfect home and climate to the Luzon pine trees which adorn the entire area. Those same trees give the city its alternative nickname, “The City of Pines.”
