Pregnant woman dies of snake bite; baby survived

A baby was rescued in Diffun, Quirino, after his mother died of being bitten by a snake.

At around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, a pregnant woman who was unconscious and had blue skin was taken to Diffun District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The hospital chief, Dr. Moises Lazaro, decided to immediately perform a post-mortem cesarean to save the baby who was still in the mother’s womb.

“A pregnant mother who was bitten by a venomous snake was rushly brought to the hospital today, August 4, 2021, at about 8:30 am, with no signs of life and cyanotic, hence, declared Dead on Arrival (DOA),” said the hospital in a Facebook post.

“On his assessment, Dr. Moises V. Lazaro, the Chief of Hospital opted for immediate post-mortem cesarean wherein the baby was about to die. At last, the baby was successfully revived,” the hospital added.

Newborn care is being provided, and the baby is now in the neonatal intensive care unit of Quirino Province Medical Center.

In the Philippines, deaths by snakebites per year have been estimated to be around 250.
The death rate from cobra bite was estimated to be as high as 107.1 deaths per 100,000 population per year at one site. Most victims were young (median age 17), and 98% were males. Only 8% of the victims studied reached a hospital. The confirmed death rate averaged 53.8/100,000 for the three populations.

6 shops in the Iloilo market burned down

The fire engulfed six stores at the Estancia Public Market in Poblacion Zone 2, Estancia, Iloilo, Wednesday night.

According to the Estancia Fire Station, the fire spread quickly because the shops were made of light materials.

It took an hour for the fire to be extinguished by firefighters.

The value of the properties burned was about P300,000. Store owners failed to rescue any of their products.

No one was reported killed or injured in the fire. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause.
