Mandaluyong LGU can’t vaccinate 70% of its population

Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said that even if all the adult population in Mandaluyong City is vaccinated against COVID, the target of 70% of the total population will still not be vaccinated due to the number of minors who are not yet a priority in COVID vaccines.

Marikina’s adult population is just over 336,000, while more than 342,000 or 70 percent of the population is targeted for vaccination.

“Maliban na lang kung may policy na pinayagan na lahat bakunahan ‘yung pediatric. Parang hindi posible in terms of policy restriction ‘yung mabakunahan mo ‘yung kabuuan mo ng 70%, kasi ang tina-target mo is 70 percent of the total population, including the pediatric,” said Teodoro.

Mandaluyong City, which has already been vaccinated beyond the target number of the eligible population, also appealed to open COVID vaccination to minors.

According to Mayor Menchie Abalos, more and more children are being hospitalized due to the severe symptoms of COVID in their city.

“Kung pwede lang mabakunahan na rin sana ang bata, kasi ‘yung pedia ward ko napupuno na. Ang pinaka-youngest ko d’yan 3 months. Kasi sila ‘yung hindi binabakunahan,” he said.

“Apela ko talaga, kung pwede sana, mabuksan na sa bata, dahil karamihan na rin ng mga nasa ospital ko, bata ang nagkakasakit,” MMDA chair Behur Abalos said.

The National Task Force against COVID-19 had earlier said that COVID vaccination would be opened to minors when the vaccine supply in the country increases, which is expected around September or October.

According to Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Rontgene Solante, more than half of the population needs to be vaccinated before seeing a drop in cases.

Today, even though more than 43 percent of the eligible or adult population of Metro Manila is fully vaccinated, and more than 75 percent is partially vaccinated, the number of new  cases continues to increase. This is because the eligible or adult population is only 70% of the region’s total population.

Also, based on data from the Metro Manila Development Authority, 64 percent or most of the more than 21,000 active COVID cases in the region as of August 21 have not been vaccinated. However, 14% were partially vaccinated, and nearly 22% were fully vaccinated.
