Kawit, Cavite police chief fired after 3 detainees escaped

Two of the 3 detainees of the Kawit Municipal Police Station who fled the custodial facility on Monday morning are still wanted.

The detainees were suspects in various cases of theft, carnapping, and drugs.

They were identified as Tristan Antonio, 19; Rhino Reyes Ortega, 27; and Jon-Jon Esquillo Cortezanoportes, 22.

According to acting police chief Maj John Conrad Villanueva, at 6:30 a.m., custodial officer Police Staff Sgt. Ryan Pascua De Guzman saw the padlock of the fugitives’ jail was already removed.

The three detainees allegedly fled at the back exit near the jail.

According to Villanueva, De Guzman serves as both a custodial officer and a desk officer.

During a follow-up operation on Tuesday, Ortega was caught in Barangay Kaingin.

De Guzman and the station chief, Police Maj Joel Celestino Palmares, were removed from their posts following the incident.

According to Calabarzon Police, this is to facilitate the investigation of the incident.

Last week, five detainees and 18 members of a religious cult Pinatikan allegedly involved in a jailbreak in Mati City, Davao Oriental, surrendered.

Among those who surrendered was the leader of the Pinatikan group, Cornelio Galon III. Their swords were confiscated.

A total of 1,367 Filipinos abroad died of COVID-19

According to the latest records of the Department of Foreign Affairs or DFA, 1,367 Filipinos have been killed in COVID-19 on August 23, 2021.

Of the four regions, the number of Overseas Filipinos or OFs in Asia Pacific is the lowest at 72. The Middle East and Africa lead in COVID-19 fatalities with 918, while the Americas is second with 247. Europe ranks third with 130.

The total number of OFs confirmed to be infected with Coronavirus reached 22,713.

Meanwhile, 1,435,118 Returning Overseas Filipinos or ROFs have returned to the Philippines according to the latest data from the Department of Health or DOH as of August 23, 2021.

According to the agency, of this number, 1,425,418 have been released from quarantine facilities. In contrast, more than 21,000 have been confirmed positive for COVID-19, of which 406 are currently being treated in hospitals, 20,631 have recovered, and 20 have died.

The government’s repatriation efforts for the countrymen affected by the pandemic abroad continue.
