18 Pinatikan cult members, 5 fugitives surrender in Davao Oriental

Five fugitives and 18 members of a religious cult Pinatikan allegedly involved in a jailbreak in Mati City, Davao Oriental, surrendered to the military on Saturday afternoon.

Among those who surrendered was the leader of the Pinatikan group, Cornelio Galon III. Their swords were confiscated.

According to the Philippine Army, the surrender occurred because one of the members of the Calapagan CAFGU detachment was a relative of one of the suspects.

CCTV footage shows the attack by more than 20 cult members on the Davao Oriental Provincial Rehabilitation and Reformatory Center.

They were seen waiting for the prisoner’s van to enter the jail facility, and when the gate opened, they ran in with their knives.

A few minutes later, the Pinatikan cult members released seven inmates and exchanged gunfire between jail guards, in which one of the attackers was killed.

There are no details yet on the fate of the surrendered fugitives and Pinatikan cult members.

Two other inmates who fled are still wanted.

Security guard shoots alleged akyat-bahay

A 40-year-old security guard surrendered to police after he shot a suspected robber in Quiapo Tuesday.

The guard was on duty at the ladies’ dormtel on Legarda Street around 10 pm when a man approached him.

He was armed with an ice pick and was about to stab the guard, so he fought back and threw a chair.

But the man allegedly attacked him again, so he shot him with his service firearm.

A bullet wound to the body immediately killed the man.

On CCTV obtained by the Manila Police District Homicide Section, the man who allegedly climbed into the house can be seen entering the area.

The knife he was carrying was also recovered at the crime scene.

The surrendered guard who was charged with homicide is already in the custody of the police.

He refused to give a statement.

According to Police Capt. Philipp Ines of the MPD public information office, it will be up to the prosecutor to decide whether the guard’s shooting can be considered self-defense based on the evidence gathered.
