Woman dies trying to save her puppy

A 28-year-old woman died after falling into the river in Barangay 176, Bagong Silang, Caloocan City this Wednesday.

According to the ward leader of the barangay, Nester Patron, around half past nine Wednesday night when they received a call that a woman had fallen into the river from the roof of her rented house.

A few minutes before the incident, Eloisa Gentugao, her boyfriend and another friend were drinking at home.

“Nag-away daw yung maglive in, tapos sabi ‘yung tuta inilagay doon sa bubong hinabol ng babae kinuha ata nadulas doon sa bubong,” the barangay leader said.

According to their friend who was drinking with them, Eloisa’s boyfriend put the puppy on the roof of the rented house for unknown reasons.

“Umiiyak siya kasi ‘yung aso niya nasa bubong. Pilit niyang kinukuha sa bubong ‘yung aso niya. Pilit siyang umaakyat. Pinipigilan namin siya hanggang nakaakyat na siya sa bubong hanggang dito na lang paa niya. ‘Yun doon na siya nahulog nasira ‘yung yero. Hindi ko naman siya nahawakan.”

According to some residents who helped in the rescue operation, it was difficult to find the woman, which took more than an hour due to the depth of the water in the river.

“Sinubukan po namin kung ano makakaya namin. Sinisid namin sa ilalim tapos pag ahon po doon nagtulong tulong po kami na mahatak ‘yung katawan kasi hindi po kaya ng isang tao lang. May mga tama po sa kaliwang tuhod, sa paa, sa hinlalak. May sugat po tapos sa kanang kamay sa bandang pulso may sugat po,” said Robert Azala, one of the residents who helped in the rescue.

The woman was rushed to the hospital, but relatives and ward leaders declared her dead on arrival.

The mother, Bebenia Retada, is very sad about what happened to her daughter.

“Sabi pa sa akin, ‘Ma, mag abroad ako next year. Mabait po ‘yon, maalalahanin lahat po ng kailangan ibinibigay nun kapag kailangan ko,’” said Bebenia.

Caloocan City police are still investigating the incident.

The woman’s partner and friend were also invited to Caloocan City Police Station 12.
