What to do before volcanic eruption?
- Build your family’s emergency supply kit, which includes:
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit and manual
- Emergency food and water
- Manual (nonelectric) can opener
- Essential medicines
- Sturdy shoes
- Respiratory (breathing) protection
- Eye protection (goggles)
- Battery-powered radio
- Follow the authorities’ instructions if they tell you to evacuate the area.
- Tune in the radio or television for volcano updates. Follow local and national government agencies’ social media pages and websites such as Phivolcs, NDRRMC, and Pagasa.
- Keep a list of emergency numbers on hand.
- Listen to disaster sirens and warning signals.
- Fill your vehicle’s gas tank to prepare for any emergency.
- If no vehicle is available, make arrangements with friends or family for transportation, or follow authorities’ instructions on where to obtain transportation.
- Place vehicles under cover, if at all possible.
- Put livestock in an enclosed area. Plan to take pets with you, but be aware that many emergency shelters cannot accept animals.
- Fill your clean water containers.
- Fill sinks and bathtubs with water as an extra supply for washing.
- Adjust the thermostat on refrigerators and freezers to the coldest possible temperature. If the power goes out, food will stay fresher longer.
- Prepare protective gear in case of heavy ashfall. Buy N95 face masks, or if none is available, you may use a wet towel or put wet tissues under surgical masks.
- Avoid going out and stay safe inside your homes.
