Typhoon Ulysses damage to agriculture reaches P3.84B – DA

The Department of Agriculture reported Wednesday that the amount of damage to agriculture due to Typhoon Ulysses reached nearly P4 billion.

According to the DA-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Operations Center’s 8 am bulletin, the total damage caused by the typhoon has climbed to P3.84 billion as of November 18. The typhoon affected 104,733 farmers and fisherfolk’s livelihood and damaged 101,904 hectares of agricultural areas with a volume of production loss at 160,873 metric tons.

Ulysses also affected irrigation and agricultural infrastructures in Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and Bicol Region. Commodities include rice, corn, high-value crops, fisheries, livestock were also damaged.

“The increase in values is attributed to updated reports from the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Bicol Region,” it said.

The total cost of damage is P1.93 billion for the rice sector alone, affecting 68,374 hectares of land with a volume of production loss at 120,015 metric tons.

The damage to corn reached P365.68 million with a total volume of 7,391 metric tons of production loss affecting 23,215 hectares.

The total cost of damage for high-value crops amounted to P795.74 million, affecting 10.315 hectares and 33,467 metric tons of production volume.

Ulysses also caused damage and losses to the livestock and poultry sub-sector amounting to P27.83, affecting 53,122 heads —cattle, carabao, goat, swine, sheep, chicken, duck, quail, and turkey.

The total damage stood at P710.79 million for fisheries, affecting the varieties of finfish, milkfish, hito, tilapia, carp, crabs, and prawns.

Agriculture and irrigation facilities also sustained damage amounting to P8.24 million.

“Affected DA Regional Field Offices are continuously conducting field validation to assess further the damage and losses in the agriculture and fisheries sector,” the Agriculture department said.

The DA assured affected farmers and fishers that they could avail of the following assistance:

  • Rice, corn, and assorted vegetable seed reserves from DA RFOs
  • Drugs and biologics for livestock and poultry
  • Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan Program of Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC)
  • Indemnification fund from Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to pay for the losses incurred
