Tribute pours in for Hidilyn Diaz after historic Olympic gold win

Filipinos celebrated the victory of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz’s first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan Monday night.

The Zamboanga native won the Philippines’ first gold medal after defeating 8 other athletes for the category, including world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China.

From the time she won the gold medal until this Tuesday afternoon, Diaz’s name is still trending, and it even surpassed the last State of the Nation Address by President Rodrigo Duterte.

And to this day, the pouring of congratulations on the weightlifter continues.

Filipino athletes such as Olympian boxer Eumir Marcial, NLEX guard Kiefer Ravena, Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone and Filipina skateboarder Margielyn Didal poured praise.

The Filipinos’ emotions were further aroused when “Lupang Hinirang” was played for the first time on the Olympic stage.

The Philippine Air Force, of which Diaz became a sergeant, was among those celebrating.

“The men and women of the Philippine Air Force join the country in celebrating this historic event. Sgt. Diaz truly personifies Diwa, Galing at Malasakit of the airmen and airwomen. Congratulations and mabuhay, Sgt. Diaz!”

The Philippine Sports Commission also congratulated Hidilyn Diaz, calling her a Filipino sports icon.

Vice President Leni Robredo also extended her congratulations to Diaz.

On her social media account, Robredo called Diaz’s victory a big win in the country. She also thanked the weightlifter for the honor brought to the Filipinos.

The Palace also thanked Diaz for the honor she brought to the country.

“The Palace congratulates Hidilyn Diaz for bringing pride and glory to the Philippines for winning the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal (weightlifting women’s 55kg),” said Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

Some also extended their salute through art.

Using bread, chocolate, hazelnut spread, and a toothpick, Jaypee Bacera Magno carved the image of Hidilyn.

According to Magno, she is impressed with the strength and courage Diaz showed to win the gold medal amidst the challenges she faced.
