Teacher’s slap did not kill 14-year-old student – PNP

As reported on “24 Oras,” the Antipolo police clarified that a forensics expert has already communicated this finding to the family of Francis Gumikib.

While the complaint for homicide against the teacher has been dismissed, there is still consideration for filing a complaint of child abuse.

The PNP Forensic Group previously explained that an unusual condition led to bleeding in the student’s brain.

The autopsy and histopathological examination conducted on Gumikib confirmed that his death resulted from brain hemorrhage and swelling.

According to the PNP, the autopsy performed on the remains of the Grade 5 student who died after the teacher allegedly slapped him confirmed that he had tuberculosis.

“Sa lungs niya may nakita kami na pulmonary tuberculosis,” said Hector Sorra, Medico Legal Division chief of PNP-Forensic Group.

According to Sorra, they are still waiting for the results of the histopathology examination on the lips of 14-year-old Francis Jay Gumikib so they can further examine it.

The Medico Legal Division is said to be able to release the full report on the cause of Gumikib’s death only after the CT scan and histopathology examination are completed.

The histopathology examination, with the result under a microscope, usually takes 30 days. But Sorra said that they will speed it up in Gumikib’s case.

Gumikib passed away a few days after being allegedly slapped by a teacher at Peñafrancia Elementary School in Rizal.

His death certificate stated that the cause of his death was global brain edema and bleeding in the brain.

Gumikib’s mother, Elena Minggoy, believes the teacher’s slapping had something to do with her son’s death. However, he said he did not know that his son was sick at the time.

She said her son experienced headaches, eye pain, nausea and vomiting when he was rushed to the hospital.

It is said that the child also vomited blood while in the emergency room and was diagnosed with lung disease.

However, the teacher previously told the investigators that her hand barely touched the child’s cheek.
