SWS: 43% of Filipino families feel Poor

The national Social Weather Survey of December 12-16, 2021, found 43% of Filipino families rating themselves as Mahirap or Poor, 39% rating themselves as Borderline Poor (by placing themselves on a horizontal line dividing Poor and Not Poor), and 19% rating themselves as Hindi Mahirap or Not Poor.

This compares to September 2021 when 45% felt Poor, 34% felt Borderline Poor, and 21% felt Not Poor.

The estimated numbers of Self-Rated Poor families are 10.7 million in December 2021 and 11.4 million in September 2021.

The 2-point decline in Self-Rated Poor in the fourth quarter of 2021 was due to decreases in Mindanao and Metro Manila, combined with slight increases in the Visayas and Balance Luzon (or Luzon outside Metro Manila).

Compared to September 2021, Self-Rated Poor fell in Mindanao from 58% to 43%, and in Metro Manila from 34% to 25%. However, it rose slightly in the Visayas from 54% to 59%, and in Balance Luzon from 38% to 41%.

On the other hand, Borderline Poor rose in Metro Manila from 30% to 47%, and in Mindanao from 34% to 48%. It rose slightly in Balance Luzon from 32% to 34% but fell in the Visayas from 42% to 33%.

Compared to September 2021, Not Poor fell in Metro Manila from 37% to 28%. It also fell in Balance Luzon from 30% to 25%. However, it rose slightly in the Visayas from 4% to 8%, while it hardly changed in Mindanao from 8% to 9%.

On Self-Rated Food Poverty, based on the type of food eaten by their families,  the December 2021 survey found 31% of families rating themselves as Food-Poor, 44% rating themselves as Borderline Food-Poor (by placing themselves on the horizontal line dividing Food-Poor and Not Food-Poor), and 24% rating themselves Not Food-Poor.

This compares to September 2021 when 30% felt Food-Poor, 44% felt Borderline Food-Poor, and 26% felt Not Food-Poor.

The estimated numbers of Self-Rated Food Poor families are 7.9 million in December 2021 and 7.5 million in September 2021.

The 1-point increase in Self-Rated Food-Poor in the fourth quarter of 2021 was due to increases in the Visayas and Balance Luzon, combined with decreases in Mindanao and Metro Manila.

Compared to September 2021, Self-Rated Food-Poor rose in the Visayas from 30% to 41%, and in Balance Luzon from 26% to 31%. However, it fell in Mindanao from 40% to 31%, while it fell slightly in Metro Manila from 24% to 21%.

On the other hand, Borderline Food-Poor rose in Metro Manila from 32% to 52%, and in Mindanao from 48% to 59%. However, it fell in the Visayas from 60% to 44%, while it fell slightly in Balance Luzon from 39% to 35%.

At the same time, Not Food-Poor fell in Metro Manila from 43% to 27%. It stayed at 35% in Balance Luzon, while it barely moved in Mindanao from 11% to 10%. However, it rose slightly in the Visayas from 10% to 15%.
