The PAMALAKAYA group is now submitting suggestions on what Marcos can do if he really wants to raise the living standards of poor farmers.

These include:

  • stopping “harmful projects” in fishing grounds and coastal communities
  • genuine rehabilitation of degrading fishing waters
  • economic subsidy to small fishermen against high commodity prices
  • ending the liberal policy that allows the importation of fisher products that prey on local fishermen
  • upholding the exclusive rights of Filipinos in territorial waters such as the West Philippine Sea

The fisherfolk sector has the highest poverty rate at 30.6%, something higher than 26.% in 2018, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. Next are the farmers at 30%.
