State of calamity declared in Or. Mindoro towns due to floods

A state of calamity has been declared in the towns of Naujan and Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro due to the flood damage in recent days.

This is to use the calamity funds for relief operations and rehabilitation.

The areas were hardest hit by the rains brought by the southwest, which was intensified by Typhoon Fabian and ravaged Luzon for several days.

Naujan Mayor Mark Marcos is appealing for help from the national government to solve the flooding.

“Kinakailangan masolusyonan Ito sa pamamagitan ng flood control mitigation projects o kung hindi man ay talagang ma-desilt na ‘tong mga major river system dito sa Oriental Mindoro partkular sa bayan ng Naujan dahil ang mga ilog natin ay buntis na, napakarami ng mga lupa at buhangin,” said Marcos.

As many as 29 barangays were affected by the flooding in Naujan, which residents pointed to on the damaged dike on the Bagtu River as the cause of the flooding.

In Naujan, the amount of damage to agriculture and infrastructure is already at P130 million.

If the weather continues to improve in Oriental Mindoro, the floods are expected to continue to subside.

Meanwhile, the Ambuklao Dam and Binga Dam in Benguet released water on Monday due to high water levels caused by continuous rain.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), 1 gate was opened at the Ambuklao Dam while 2 at the Binga Dam.

According to a PAGASA report at 6 a.m. Monday, the water level in Ambuklao reached 751.21, close to the 752 normal high water level.

The water level at Binga Dam is 573.14, with a normal high water level of 575.

Authorities guard against possible flooding those living near the dams and Agno River at the bottom of both dams.

This Sunday, the Ipo Dam in Bulacan also released water due to the rising water level caused by the rains brought by the southwest.
