Signal no.1 raised over Batanes due to TD Emong

Tropical Depression “Emong” continues to slow down and is currently over the sea off the Southern tip of Taiwan.

At 4:00 AM today, the center of Tropical Depression “EMONG” was estimated based on all available data at 165 km Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.

It is moving Northwestward at 25 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.

Strong winds (strong breeze to near gale) will continue to prevail over Batanes. Winds will gradually weaken in the coming hours as the tropical depression moves away from Extreme Northern Luzon.

Under the influence of the tropical depression, rough seas (2.5 to 4.0 m) will be experienced over the seaboards of Batanes and Cagayan including Babuyan Islands. Sea travel is risky over these waters, especially for those using small seacrafts. Mariners without the proper experience should immediately seek safe harbor.

On the forecast track, “EMONG” may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility this morning.

The high movement speed of “EMONG”, the weak nature of its circulation, and the frictional effects of Taiwan’s rugged terrain prevents it from further intensifying. “EMONG” is forecast to maintain its strength until it makes landfall over coast of Fujian or Guangdong country in southeastern China this morning or afternoon.
