Sara Duterte running for president? Davao City mayor withdraws reelection bid

Speculations rose that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will run for president in 2022 after the presidential daughter withdrew her reelection bid on Tuesday, November 9.

Inday Sara made the move just six days before the deadline set by the Commission on Elections for the substitution of candidates for the 2022 elections.

“This afternoon, I withdrew my candidacy for Davao City mayor,” Duterte-Carpio said in Filipino on her Facebook page.

She added her brother, Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, will be running for mayor. Baste withdrew his candidacy Tuesday morning as advised by his sister.

Sara Duterte did not detail the reasons for her withdrawal. “This is all for now,” she said.

In Pulse Asia’s presidential survey in September, Duterte-Carpio remained the top choice of Filipinos.

“With 20% of Filipino adults expressing support for a probable presidential bid by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, she emerges as the leading presidentiable as of  2021,” according to Pulse Asia.

“A quarter of Filipino adults (25%) would elect Senate President Vicente Sotto III as the country’s next vice-president if the May 2022 elections were held during the survey period.”

  • Duterte, Sara “Inday” (20%)
  • Marcos, Ferdinand “Bongbong (15%)
  • Domagoso, Francisco “Isko Moreno” (13%)
  • Pacquiao, Emmanuel “Manny” (12%)
  • Poe, Grace (9%)
  • Robredo Maria Leonor “Leni” (8%)
