Retired AFP, PNP generals oppose red-tagging on Robredo supporters

Retired military officers sided with the red-tagging of critics in Vice President Leni Robredo’s camp.

According to former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, the influx of support for Robredo was slapped in the face by critics.

“Judging by reports, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is already a battalion of former military and police colonels and generals that has gone proudly pink,” Trillanes said.

It will be recalled that on March 7, former generals of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Philippine National Police met with Robredo.

“Former AFP and PNP chiefs, all anti-insurgency veterans, have come out for Leni, and their support belies the fake news peddled by conspiracy theorists,” said Trillanes, who is running for Senator under Robredo’s ticket.

“Kung naniniwala sila sa black propaganda laban kay Leni, hindi sila pipirma ng manifesto, hindi sila mangangampanya para kay Leni,” said Trillanes.

At an earlier media briefing, retired Police Maj. Gen. Generoso Cerbo Jr. at Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Domingo Tutaan said that many other former PNP and AFP officials support Robredo.

The former generals said they supported Robredo because of his integrity and “moral strength.”

He also said that Robredo has a program of action that will address the people’s problems, especially in matters of defense and security.

On Trillanes’ side, he said that if Robredo cannot lead the country, he will not be able to get the support of former generals.

Four other retired AFP chiefs, Emmanuel Bautista, Jessie Dellosa, Hernando Iriberri, and Eduardo Oban Jr., first expressed support for Robredo.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has postponed the implementation of its agreement with Rappler for the election following opposition from some government officials, some candidates, and other partisan groups.

In the memorandum, Comelec commissioner Socorro Inting said they first suspended the implementation of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Rappler to resolve various issues.

“Given the allegations against Rappler and the subsequent filing of the Petition with the Supreme Court, it is judicious for the Commission to hold in abeyance the implementation of the provisions of the MOA until the issues are settled and/or decision of the court is rendered,” the memorandum stated.
