Raffy Tulfo: Next Senate president should have ‘least business interest’

Senator Raffy Tulfo remarked on Thursday that the next Senate president would be a senator with “least business interest.”

“Paano ko pipiliin o bobotohin ang susunod na magiging Senate president? Well, simple lang. ‘Yung Senate president na sa tingin kong wala masyadong business interest na pinoprotektahan o poprotektahan,” Tulfo told CNN Philippines.

However, he clarified that he is not referring to a specific senator, adding that he will continue to “investigate and research” the business interests of senators who want the position.

Senators Cynthia Villar, Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Imee Marcos have all approached Tulfo about the Senate presidency in the 19th Congress.

On Wednesday night, the broadcaster-turned-lawmaker said he asked Senator Francis Escudero whether he was interested in becoming Senate President.

According to Tulfo, Escudero is still considering running for Senate President.

Meanwhile, Tulfo has stated that he is interested in chairing the Senate committees on Civil Service, Government Reorganization and Professional Regulation, and Labor, Employment & Human Resources Development, and the Senate panel that addresses the concerns of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

“‘Yung tatlong ‘yun dahil yun ay nalilinya sa ginagawa kong trabaho,” Tulfo said.

He claims that senators seeking the Senate’s top job have yet to offer him a chairmanship in exchange for his vote.

Tulfo, on the other hand, stated that drafting a bill to prosecute “wage theft” would be his priority.

According to him, there are numerous complaints about employers who do not provide adequate compensation to their employees.

Tulfo, brother of Raffy Tulfo and a newspaper columnist and former special envoy for public diplomacy to China, was arrested on Wednesday for cyber libel, according to Manila Police District Director Police Brigadier General Leo Francisco.

Tulfo was apprehended around 10:30 a.m. and was delivered to the Special Mayor’s Reaction Team (SMART) office at Manila City Hall.
