Prosecution of Leila De Lima continues – DOJ

According to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, the Department of Justice has found a solid reason to continue prosecuting Senator Leila De Lima despite certain witnesses withdrawing their statements in the drug charges against her.

According to Guevarra, the DOJ prosecution team decided that the recantations had no probative significance until the defendants were brought before the court for questioning to determine their truthfulness.

“After a thorough review of the evidence already presented as well as evidence still to be presented, there is good reason to continue the active prosecution of the senator,” Guevarra told reporters.

After self-confessed drug lord Kerwin Espinos and former Bureau of Corrections officer Rafael Ragos withdrew their narcotics claims against De Lima, calls for her freedom were revived.

Espinosa’s alleged bodyguard and driver, Marcelo Adorco, has likewise recanted all of his charges against him and others, including the senator.

“In any event, the final say on the disposition of the cases rests on the judge alone and no other,” Guevarra said.

Meanwhile, jailed drug dealer Herbert Colangco has refused to retract his accusations against the senator.

In a tweet, Leila De Lima also stated that she had no ill will toward “the convicted criminals who were coerced or bribed falsely testify” against her.

“But when this is done with relish and gusto, like how Herbert Colanggo seems to enjoy the spotlight, whether when speaking to the media or on the witness stand, then that is another matter altogether, “De Lima said.

“Colanggo is actually savoring every moment of his role in this charade, while showing his handlers that his performance is worth every bribe and privilege that they promised him,” De Lima added.

According to Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento, the Department of Justice would not oppose Leila De Lima’s request for a medical leave.

He did, however, state that she should follow the standard procedures.

“Security arrangements, no media interviews relating to the merits of the cases, to submit reports of the medical procedures to the court and related matters,” Malcontento said.
