Police probe motive behind ambush of Pampanga councilor candidate

Police will look into all angles on the possible motive for the ambush and murder of a barangay chairman, a councilor candidate in Pampanga.

In a report by CJ Torrida on GMA Regional TV “Balitang Amianan” on Wednesday, it was said that the perpetrators on a motorcycle ambushed Alvin Mendoza in Barangay Magliman in Bacolor, Pampanga.

Mendoza is chairman of Barangay Alasas in San Fernando City, Pampanga, and is running for councilor in the upcoming elections.

CCTV footage shows the riding in tandem, accompanying and shooting the victim inside the vehicle.

When Mendoza’s vehicle stopped, the riding in tandem also stopped, and the gunman got off and shot the victim again.

Later, a man who was also on a motorcycle came and shot the victim.

The culprits fled after the crime.

“Talagang may intensyon sila [salarin] na patayin ang biktima sa nakikita naman natin sa CCTV. Pinag-aaralan pa namin ang motibo [sa krimen] although kandidato itong biktima pero hindi natin masabi na yung talaga ang motibo,” said Police Colonel Alvin Consolacion, acting Director, Pampanga-PPO.

(They [the perpetrator] had the intention to kill the victim from what we see on CCTV. Although the victim is a candidate, we are still studying the motive [for the crime]. We can’t say that it is really the motive.)

Consolacion said all angles on the possible motive of the crime would be looked into in the investigation conducted by the authorities.

The police have formed a special investigation task group to focus on and solve the murder of the victim.

The Pampanga provincial government also condemned the killing of Mendoza.

They offered a reward to anyone who could teach the perpetrators or solve the crime.

According to the report, the bereaved relatives of the victim did not give a statement.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) monitored 52 recorded cases of election-related violence in the country a week before the May 9 polls.

“As of May 1, nakapagtala na po tayo ng 52 election-related incidents. Out of the 52 election-related incidents, 28 po doon ang validated non-election related incidents, while 14 po ang under investigation and suspected,” she said.
