PNR train hits, kills 3 minors in Manila

Three minors died on the spot when a Philippine National Railways train hit them in Sta Mesa, Manila, last Sunday night.

Three friends, ages 16 to 17, were walking in the middle of the railroad at around 6 p.m., according to barangay tanod Lester Narra.

The guard allegedly tried to call the youths, but he did not seem to be heard due to the loud horn of the train.

The train’s origin is also curved, so the victims may not know which lane it is in.

The victims were residents of Old Sta Mesa and just went to the area to play basketball.

The minors sustained severe injuries and died instantly.

“Nakita ko sila pababa eh. Ditong way sila. Nagulat ako bigla silang lumipat eh nandun yung tren. Kaya nadisgrasya sila kasi hindi nila alam saan nanggagaling yung tren,” said Edson Ragas, witness.

Police are now looking for the train operator for investigation.

Ammonia leaks at ice plant in Caloocan

The operation of an ice plant was temporarily suspended due to an ammonia leak in Barangay 101, Caloocan, this Sunday.

According to the account of one of the plant employees, they were making ice when the ice suddenly fell on one of the pipes of their ice machine.

There was a small hole in the pipe which caused the ammonia to leak. They immediately closed the main valve of the ice machine to prevent further leakage of ammonia.

The incident was reported at 1 p.m., according to Fire Officer 2 Kalvin Clien Mazo of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Caloocan.

It took four hours to clean up the area by BFP. No employees were rushed to the hospital, and no residents were affected.

The said plant has been cordoned off and will not be allowed to re-operate until it is inspected again by BFP this Monday morning.

In June, an ammonia leak was also reported at a cold storage facility in Dagat-Dagatan, Caloocan city.

In February, 2 workers of an ice plant in Navotas City died, and 90 people were hospitalized following an ammonia leak.
