PNP asks Facebook to give list of pages, accounts it took down

The Philippine National Police (PNP) requested Facebook for the list of accounts and pages allegedly linked to the police and military that the social media giant took down due to coordinated inauthentic behavior.

According to PNP spokesman Police Colonel Ysmael Yu, Facebook has yet to respond to their request. The agency asked for the list a day after the pages and accounts were purged down.

“PNP is asking FB on those accounts detected as fake… as of now, no feedback,” Yu said in a message on Wednesday.

Yu added that the PNP’s Anti-Cybercrime Group and the Information Technology Management Service coordinate with Facebook management regarding the issue.

“It is to be noted that PNP does not own [the] FB system, so it is not in our control. FB has their list. Sila may-ari, sila naka-detect, sila din ang may skills ng indication of detection sa mga suspicious accounts,” Yu said.

The PNP already refuted claims that the fake Facebook accounts were connected to the police force.

President Rodrigo Duterte questioned Facebook on Monday regarding the removal of some accounts linked to the government security forces.

“Facebook, listen to me. We allow you to operate here hoping that you could help us also. Now, if government cannot espouse or advocate something which is for the good of the people, then what is your purpose here in my country?” Duterte said.

“What would be the point of allowing you to continue if you cannot help us? We are not advocating mass destruction, massacre. It’s a fight of ideas,” he added.

Some of the pages and accounts that Facebook took down last week had posts related to Anti-Terrorism Law and criticism of activists and communists.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police have since remained firm that they abide by the Facebook’s policies.

“Tell me kung bakit hindi ko magamit para sa kapakanan ng taumbayan? [If] government cannot use it for the good of the people then we have to talk. We have to talk sense,” Duterte told Facebook.
