PH records 7,186 new COVID-19 cases, highest in 44 days

The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 7,186 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the country to 1.56 million infections.

Based on newly collected data by the Department of Health, here are the new incoming data for today:

All cases: 1,562,420
Still recovering: 56,477, or 3.6% of total infections
Just recovered: 5,672, making it 1,478,625 all recovering
Deaths: 72, which raises the total local death toll to 27,318

Today the highest number of new COVID-19 cases (7,186) in nearly a month and a half was recorded. The last time there were more fresh cases on June 13th.

The OCTA Research Group is now calling for “circuit-breaking” lockdowns, especially since the surge in COVID-19 infections in Metro Manila is already beginning, possibly due to the Delta variant.

The Department of Health insisted that there is no COVID-19 surge in Metro Manila despite the increase in  in the past few days.

“‘Wag na muna natin gamitin ang surge. Kasi meron ‘yang definition sa epidemiology which is not yet happening right now. Tumataas ang kaso. That we can verify,” said Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

The OCTA Research Group first noted that there were “early signs” of a COVID-19 surge again, particularly in Metro Manila.

“If next week nag-increase pa ‘yung number and if more than 1k average cases kasi ngayon were around 900 cases ang average ng . Pag lumampas na tayong 1,200 to 1,500 it’s going to be critical an, and we really have to put a hard stop to it,” said OCTA Research fellow Guido David.

According to OCTA Research, there are now 954 average daily cases in NCR, which is 47 percent higher than the previous week.

Up to 84 Delta variant cases were added to the DOH’s record in the past four days.

Meanwhile, about 375,570 doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines arrived in the Philippines last night, according to the National Task Force Against COVID-19. A total of 51,480 shots of the vaccine were sent to Cebu City and Davao City today, while the rest were allocated to Metro Manila.
