OCTA projects 2,500 new COVID-19 cases in NCR on New Year’s Eve

The OCTA Research projects there could be more than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila on New Year’s Eve.

The positivity rate in the National Capital Region (NCR) has reached 14%, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said Thursday.

“More than 2,000 new cases is possible on December 31, with more than 2,500 new cases nationwide,” David said on Twitter.

“The rate of increase is dramatic, and we should really comply strictly with minimum public health standards and reduce social and mass gatherings,” he added.

The Department of Health calls on the public to think carefully about what to do to celebrate the new year.

“Sa pag-doble ng bilang ng mga naitalang bagong kaso ng COVID-19 sa nakalipas na dalawang araw, hinihikayat ng DOH ang publiko na gawin ang lahat ng ating makakaya upang maiwasan na maging panibagong 2020 ang taong 2022. Lahat tayo ay kumilos ng may lubos na pag-iingat na parang naririto na ang mas nakakahawang Omicron variant,” DOH said in a statement.

According to the DOH, the number of people who test positive for the virus has doubled recently, and people need to be more careful.

The department advises all Filipinos, whether vaccinated or not, not to party with too many people. He said it would be better to have only the family with him or the so-called family bubble.

If it is necessary to meet with friends or co-workers, he said it is better not to eat simultaneously. People can meet for a while, but face masks should not be removed.

The DOH reminds everyone that nearly 1.5 million senior citizens are still unvaccinated.

This sector is the most dangerous when infected, so they can still infect others even if a person is vaccinated. Especially since the more contagious omicron variant is here in the country.

He added that health protocol adherence, including social distancing, hand washing, and wearing a face mask, should be continued.

They also reminded those from other countries not to wander when they come to the Philippines.
