NTC: Minors cannot register SIM cards

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) clarified yesterday that minors could not be registered as owners of SIM cards.

“Ipinagbababawal po ng batas kasi yung SIMs ay irehistro sa pangalan po ng menor de edad,” said NTC consultant Edgardo Cabarrios.

According to Cabarrios, if the owner is a minor and registers a SIM card, he is still required to present the consent of his parent or guardian.

He also said that his parent or guardian needs to name the SIM to be registered.

It will be remembered that all mobile subscribers are required to enroll their SIM cards within 180 days or six months, from the effectivity of the SIM Card Registration law on December 27.

Failure to register a SIM card will result in its deactivation.

Meanwhile, even foreign tourists who buy SIM card in the Philippines are also required to register.

They only need to present their passport with their visa and the period of their stay in the country.

Their SIM cards are active for 30 days.

In the event that the foreigner’s stay in the country is extended, he must show evidence that his stay has been extended in order also to extend the validity of the purchased SIM card.

Registration is online and just fill out the form on the telco’s website. Information requested includes name, address, date of birth, and gender.

If you don’t have an ID, you can get a barangay certificate with a photo.

As for those who do not have access to the internet, Cabarios said the Department of Information and Communications Technology, telcos, and other government agencies could help with registration.

The NTC warns that the SIM card cannot be used if it is not registered.

The NTC also ensures that personal data is safe and protected in the SIM Registration Act.

Cabarrios first said that there is no limit to the number of SIM cards a Filipino can register but warned that he would be responsible for all SIM cards registered under his name.
