NDRRMC recommends state of calamity nationwide

Due to the severe damage caused by typhoon Paeng, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) encouraged President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to declare a state of calamity throughout the country for one year.

According to NDRRMC Executive Director Raymundo Ferrer, 16 of the 17 Regions in the country are considered to be at ‘high risk’ due to the cyclone that caused severe flash floods and landslides.

“The Philippines should declare a national state of calamity due to the effects, damage and projected impacts by Severe Tropical Storm Paeng for a period of one year, unless earlier lifted,” according to Ferrer’s recommendation to PBBM in a virtual meeting.

Ferrer also recommended that the country receive help from international assistance based on need.

On the part of the President, he said that he would first wait for the official resolution to be submitted by the NDRRMC before approving the declaration of a state of calamity.

PBBM announced that many regions were affected by typhoon Paeng so this justifies the declaration of a state of calamity.

The state of calamity allows the government to use the calamity funds and prevent the price of basic goods from rising and from having loans or loans without interest.

This Saturday afternoon, the NDRRMC revised its first reported death toll of 72 in typhoon Paeng, clarifying that only 45 people died.

Typhoon Paeng affected 271,259 people or a total of 72,000 families in ten regions in the country, according to data on the NDRRMC website.

37 landslides were also recorded, while 219 areas suffered widespread flooding.

PAENG is forecast to track north northwestward or northwestward beginning tonight or tomorrow early morning through Wednesday before turning west northwestward towards southern China. On the forecast track, this tropical cyclone may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility tomorrow morning or afternoon.

While over the West Philippine Sea, PAENG is forecast to re-intensify into a severe tropical storm tonight or tomorrow early morning and may reach typhoon category by tomorrow evening or Tuesday morning. However, a weakening trend is expected by late Tuesday as the tropical cyclone encounters another surge of the Northeast Monsoon.
