Malacañang appeals to jeepney drivers, operators not to continue strike

Malacañang yesterday appealed to the drivers and operators of jeeps not to pursue the plan to stop this week amid the continuing rise in the price of petroleum products.

According to Andanar, the government will continue to assist the affected drivers and operators.

He said the government is doing its best to assist drivers and operators while also continuing the distribution of fuel subsidies.

As of June 1, 2022, more than 180,000 public utility vehicle operators have been granted fuel subsidies, according to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.

The price of gasoline is set to rise again today to P2.70 per liter, while diesel is at P6.55 per liter.

According to the United Nationwide Association of Drivers and Operators (PISTON), such increases in fuel prices will significantly affect the transport sector, especially now that jeepney drivers only earn P300 per day after 12 to 18 hours of working.

Meanwhile, the headline inflation rate in the Philippines rose further from 4.9 percent in April 2022 to 5.4 percent in May 2022. This was the highest recorded inflation since December 2018. In May of the previous year, inflation was lower at 4.1 percent.
