NAIA brings back shoe removal for security inspection

After more than two decades, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is bringing back the removal of shoes for security inspection of passengers leaving the country, according to the Office of Transportation (OTS).

OTS spokesperson Kim Marquez said that the “mandatory shoe removal policy” was initiated on July 10 as part of their intensified “security arrangement” in all NAIA terminals.

It was first implemented in December 2001 when it became a “global policy” after the attempted detonation of a bomb hidden in a terrorist’s shoe while he was on an American Airlines flight to Miami from Paris.

In preparation for the new rule, Marquez said that on December 1, 2022, almost all but one of the X-ray machines at NAIA Terminal 1 were removed to make room for departing passengers and their luggage for such security check.

“There will be only one security check and that is at the final check right after the immigration area where high-tech X-ray machines, body scanners and metal detectors are in place to ensure all passengers are well screened,” explained Marquez.

By removing the X-ray machines, the OTS is said to have resolved the complaint of the travelers about the excessive number of security checks they go through at the airport. But now, they have to take off their shoes.
