Mother, baby killed in truck accident; driver admitted he used drugs

A mother and her baby were killed after a truck carrying a backhoe hit them in Bulacan. The truck driver said he lost brakes and admitted he took illegal drugs before driving.

Katrina Son told GMA News “Saksi” on Tuesday that authorities have subjected the driver, Eliazar Lumawag, to a drug test, and he admitted that he had used drugs before the accident.

Michelle Ramos, 17-year-old, and her three-month-old son, Matthew, were killed in the accident in the village of Santo Cristo, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

The victims went under the flatbed truck carrying a backhoe.

Nine others were injured in the disaster and were rushed to the hospital.

Lumawag said the truck lost its brakes, and he avoided the jeepney in front of it.

“Namili ako dun sa jeep saka sa pinasukan ko hindi ko alam kung ano ang pinasukan ko na yun, pinili ko yung pinasukan ‘pag sa jeep marami ako maano dyan,” he said.

According to a man in the area, he immediately ran towards the driver because he planned to flee.

The driver denied that he had been drinking but admitted to using drugs.

Michelle’s husband said they had just visited Bulacan and were on their way home. His wife and child were dressing up when the tragedy struck.

“Nandun po ako sa kusina ayun po rumagasa na po yung truck tapos nagpagulong gulong na kami. Tapos nagising po ako nakaipit po ako sa yero,” said Rolly, who was also injured, including his father.

According to Lumawag, they came from the pier to retrieve the backhoe and were on their way to Norzagaray, Bulacan.

The suspect asked for forgiveness from the victims’ families.
