More than 22 million devotees to join Traslacion 2024

Church representative Fr. Hans Magdurulang announced on December 27 that over 22 million followers are anticipated to join in the Traslacion 2024, a revered procession of the Black Nazarene on January 9.

The event will make a comeback after a three-year halt from 2021 to 2023 due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Fr. Magdurulang mentioned their crowd size calculation was grounded on the 22 million followers present at the previous Traslacion in January 2020.

(Based on the number of people who attended the last Traslacion in 2020, it reached 22 million, but this is not only on the day of the festival on Jan. 9. This number is from Dec. 31, the start of novena, until the end of the festival on Jan. 10),” he said.

Officials at Quiapo Church are thinking about encasing the Black Nazarene in glass to protect it from harm throughout the festivities.

A part of the cross will remain outside the protective glass for worshippers wishing to touch it. The church cautions participants in the Traslacion against jostling or stepping on others to reach the Black Nazarene. Fr. Magdurulang also alerts those headed to Quiapo Church of a safety checkpoint at Villalobos.
