Mindanao earthquake update: A child was confirmed dead while classes were suspended today, December 16, as strong quakes still hit the Mindanao area after a powerful magnitude 6.9 quake yesterday.
The earthquake hit at 2:11 pm on Sunday, December 15.
The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in Davao del Sur reported on its Facebook page that a 6-year-old girl who failed to get out of their house during the strong earthquake.
PIA also said several people are feared to be trapped inside the collapsed three-storey Southern Trade building in Padada, Davao del Sur.
According to Senator Richard Gordon, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) immediately set up search and rescue operations to save the victims.
The PRC chairman added that there were sufficient numbers of rescuers and equipment to speed up the operation.
In October, another 6.4 magnitude earthquake also hit the Mindanao region.
Class suspension due to Mindanao earthquake
Meanwhile, classes in Mindanao were suspended for Monday, December 16th.
Classes will be suspended at all levels in public and private schools in the following areas
- Davao City
- Davao Del Sur
- General Santos City
- Koronadal City
- Tupi, South Cotabato
- M’Lang, Cotabato
Mindanao earthquake update: strong quakes recorded
Strong quakes continued to hit Mindanao Region following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake yesterday.
A magnitude 4.3 earthquake was recorded in Cotabato.
According to the Phivolcs, the quake was recorded at 10 kilometers southeast of the town of Tulunan, at 1:57 am Monday (December 16) with a depth of 16 kilometers.
Instrumental intensity two was recorded in Kidapawan City and intensity 1 in Koronadal City.
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake was recorded 9 kilometers northeast of the town of Lutayan province of Sultan Kudarat; 2:24 am with a depth of 28 kilometers.
Instrumental intensity 4 recorded in Kidapawan City, intensity 3 in Tupi, South Cotabato and intensity 2 in Alabel, Sarangani; Koronadal City; General Santos City.
Magnitude 4.3 earthquake was recorded at 6 kilometers Southwest of the town of Matanao in Davao del Sur province at 3:02 am with a depth of 9 kilometers.
Instrumental intensity 4 recorded in Kidapawan City, intensity 3 in Koronadal City; Tupi, South Cotabato, intensity 2 in General Santos City; Alabel, Sarangani and intensity 1 in Kiamba, Sarangani.
A magnitude 4.1 earthquake was also recorded in the 20 kilometers Northwest of Malungon town in Sarangani province at 3:10 am with a depth of 26 kilometers.
