Maynilad will be punished for prolonged service interruption: MWSS

Maynilad will be penalized for prolonged and unusual water service interruptions, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) said Monday.

According to the MWSS Regulatory Board, Maynilad should ensure 24/7 water supply to its consumers. However, due to a malfunction at the Putatan treatment plant, the production of water supplied to residents has decreased.

Residents were affected in some areas in southern Metro Manila and Cavite.

The water interruption schedule set by the company is also not being followed, according to MWSS.

“Customers within the Putatan water treatment plan supply zone were found to have been deprived of the water service obligation for at least 15 days, which adversely impacted their health and welfare,” said MWSS regulatory board chief Patrick Lester Ty.

Due to this, Maynilad has to implement rebates for the affected customers, which is expected to be felt in April. The amount of the refund will be determined.

Maynilad first explained that they do not control the amount of moss in Laguna de Bay that needs to be cleaned by the Putatan plant, so water treatment takes a long time, and there is a service interruption.

According to the National Water Resources Board, the water level at Angat Dam is still low.

“We have to manage limited supply with the relatively low level of Angat,” said NWRB Director Sevilla David Jr.

The water supply in Metro Manila is still at 48 cubic meters per second. It is planned to reduce the supply of irrigation and irrigation now that the cropping season is ending.

Cloud seeding materials are also ready in case needed in March or April.

Maynilad is the water and wastewater services provider of cities and municipalities that form the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area in the Philippines. It is an agent and contractor of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS). Maynilad is one of two private water providers in Metro Manila, the other being Manila Water.
