Man arrested over abduction attempt of 5-year-old at school

A 5-year-old student in Quezon City was allegedly saved from attempted abduction by a man who claimed to have picked the child up from school, according to a report by James Agustin in Unang Balita this Friday.

In the CCTV footage, the suspect can be seen walking around the school wearing a black jacket, shorts, and bonnet and carrying a backpack.

“Nung tinatanong nung titser kung sino yung sundo nung biktima, sumagot yung suspek na siya raw yung kaniyang daddy. So nakuha niya yung bata (When the teacher asked who picked up the victim, the suspect replied that he was the child’s daddy. So took the child,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Von June Nuyda, chief of Novaliches Police Station.

It is said that the attempted abduction only unfolded when the child cried and the suspect looked like the parent of another student.

Villagers and police caught the suspect, who was identified as Michael Buenaventura.

According to a security guard, before the incident, they had received a complaint that the suspect was knocking on houses to ask for help, so they were looking for him.

There are also some parents who are saying the suspect tried to take their child.

Buenaventura is facing a complaint of abduction in relation to Republic Act 7610 or Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.

Buenaventura strongly denied the accusation against him.

“Hindi po totoo iyon. Hindi ko nga po nahawakan yung bata. Ang layo-layo ko ( It is not true. I didn’t even touch the child. I was far away),” the suspect said.

The suspect added that he was only joking when he introduced himself as the victim’s father.

The investigation shows that the suspect was previously charged with child abuse and imprisoned for illegal drugs.

Buenaventura is now in the custody of the Quezon City Police District

Meanwhile, the crime index in the nation has decreased in just one month, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

According to PNP head Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., the reason for this decline was their proactive response to criminality and other types of lawlessness, which is demonstrated by the system operation efforts of police agencies and personnel around the nation.
