Inhabitant.com has ‘brought to light’ the originality of an idea that is, might you say, “lighting up people’s lives.”

Students at MIT have mounted plastic bottles filled with bleach and water onto the rooftops of homes, market stalls and more.

The plastic bottles defract light, giving it an almost luminescent effect – pushing light in every direction possible. MIT took part in the Solar Bottle Project with the assistance of Isang Litrong Liwanag, meaning “A Litre of Light” – installing 10,000 of the light bottles throughout Manila.

The bottles are mounted with a fiberglass brace to assist students in safely installing the bottles on rooftops while giving them the ability to seal them from rain and other harmful issues.

One bottle of water and bleach radiates light the same as a standard 60 watt light bulb.

The bottles can be made and mounted in less than an hour and can be used for up to five years before they need to be installed again.
