Lacson, Sotto, Magalong join forces vs hacking

Due to the worsening problem of cybersecurity and hacking, Partido Reporma chairman and standard-bearer Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and his running mate Senate President Vicente Tito Sotto III, along with Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, focused on finding a solution to this issue that victimizes especially overseas Filipino workers.

Lacson and Sotto were invited to the Summer Capital of the Philippines on Friday to attend the Youth Empowerment Forum of the Sangguniang Kabataan. The two veteran lawmakers met with the mayor where Magalong’s ‘smart city’ project was discussed.

Lacson lauded Magalong’s program, especially as it is connected to his goal of having complete digitalization for government transactions to help curb corruption and other government corruption and cybersecurity-related issues.

Lacson stressed the need for government support for research and development that can improve the service of government, banks, and other businesses. However, despite the laws they passed in the Senate and allocating funds, the Filipinos still did not have access to proper technology.

“Ang kalaban talaga dito corruption, ano. ‘Yung sa amin kasi, ‘pag na-solve natin ‘yung corruption sa government at least 50 percent of all our problems will be solved. Sinasadya e. We can fully digitalize our economy. Pati ‘yung mga business transactions, but they refuse, I don’t know why,” said Lacson.

Due to the strengthening of digitalization in Baguio City, the Lacson-Sotto tandem praised the smooth management of Magalong, who is also a retired general. For the seasoned legislator, what the mayor does is a perfect example of good governance.

Meanwhile, Anakalusugan Rep. Michael Defensor said cybercriminals involved in the hacking of BDO Unibank accounts would face economic sabotage charges.

“The act of breaking into a bank’s computer system and stealing money from more than 50 deposit accounts constitutes economic sabotage,” he said.

Such offense is punishable with life in prison and a fine of up to P5 million, Defensor added.

Earlier, Unionbank said it had already identified six “persons of interest” and frozen P5 million worth of funds.
