Justice secretary Remulla declares he will not resign from his post

“It won’t happen.” This was announced by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla in the face of calls for him to resign after his eldest son was arrested in connection with a case related to illegal drugs.

“It will not happen. I will not comment anymore on the other issues there, but it will not happen,” said Remulla in the news conference this Tuesday.

This is the first time the secretary has addressed reporters since the arrest of his son, Juanito Remulla III.

The younger Remulla received the box containing “kush” or high-grade marijuana that came from America.

Sec Remulla said in the press conference that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., will decide if he should leave his post.

“That is not my call. I am a very honorable person when it comes to this. It is the President’s call,” he said.

Marcos had earlier said that the calls for Justice Secretary Remulla to resign were baseless.

Personnel of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) arrested the younger Remulla last week. The seized marijuana is estimated to be worth P1.3 million.

He has been charged with possession of illegal drugs in the Las Piñas City Regional Trial Court.

Sec Remulla said he would not interfere in the case of the son, whom he said he had not spoken to since his arrest.

It is said that Justice Secretary Remulla also gave a directive to the lawyers not to bring the resolutions regarding his son’s case to the DOJ.

“Sabi ko, if there’s a resolution, do not let it reach the DOJ. Let it be discussed in court… If it’s an adverse case against my son, it will not be appealed here. It will go straight to the courts for trial,” he added.

Meanwhile, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said it had been their policy to blur the face in suspect’s mugshots after netizens criticized Juanito Remulla III’s mugshot.

“We have a standing policy on media handling so mali na sabihin na hindi namin ginagawa [it would be wrong to say that we are not doing it],” said PDEA spokesperson Derrick Carreon .
