Isko vows to make Philippines the next Singapore

If elected president in Eleksyon 2022, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno outlined his ambition to transform the Philippines into the new Singapore.

“It’s easy to say we can be a Singapore. Singapore is a very small country. It’s manageable,” Moreno told Rappler.

“But there’s no harm in achieving or trying to achieve what Singaporeans achieved, kasi sila yung pinakamalapit sa atin at sa kasaysayan, pinaka-dugyot ang Singapore [because they are the closest to us and in history, Singapore is the worst],” he added.

The mayor remarked that his first two years in office would be critical.

“I think the first two years matter most to me of that six years mandate. Which is paano tayo makakatawid sa pandemyang ito? While we aspire better things, good things, kapag gutom ang tao, namatay ang tao sa sakit, balewala lahat ‘yan,” Moreno noted.

“There’s nothing to govern if people are dying. So, I’ll go back to basic. Tawid lang kita,” Moreno added.

Housing, education, labor and employment, health, tourism and creative industries, infrastructure, digital information and industry 4.0, agriculture, good governance, and innovative governance are all part of Moreno’s 10-point economic plan, which he revealed in January.

He stated that his administration would prioritize livelihood and the bare necessities like homes, schools, and hospitals.

Early this week, Mayor Isko called on Vice President Leni Robredo to drop her presidential bid on Sunday, claiming she was running to keep the Marcos family out of Malacanang.

“Kung meron mang supreme sacrifice, ‘yung number 2 (sa survey) should do and start. Let Leni withdraw. Withdraw, Leni, if you love your country,” he said.

“I’m calling for Leni to withdraw. Whatever you’re doing is not effective against the Marcoses. Withdraw, come and join us. Pwede pa-sub? Pa-sub naman. Baka kami maka-3 points, isa sa amin,” Mayor Isko added.
