Investigation process vs PH envoy to Brazil Marichu Mauro

The 51-year-old Pinay maid caught on camera being beaten by Philippine ambassador to Brazil Marichu Mauro has returned to the Philippines and is in South Cotabato.

According to Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, who contacted the victim, she was ready to reveal what she knew at the right time and after taking a rest.

It will be recalled that CCTV footage inside the diplomatic residence in Brazil wherein Marichu Mauro is seen frequently hurting the Pinay helper has been scattered worldwide.

This is also why the envoy has been sent back to the Philippines and was asked to explain.

During the investigation, it turned out that Mauro took the maid with her when she was assigned to Brazil in 2018.

“I understand that she’s also been with the family of ambassador Mauro for quite some time, going decades. So they must have known each other for quite some time,” said Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Eduardo Malaya.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. formed the fact-finding team, including the following:

  • Consul General Ezzedin H. Tago (Sydney, Australia)
  • Ambassador Jaime Victor B. Ledda (The Netherlands)
  • Ambassador Narciso T. Castañeda (Oman)
  • Atty. Ihna Alyssa Marie Santos (Foreign Service Officer 4)

Locsin explained that the DFA’s Human Resources Management Office would conduct a preliminary investigation.

If the case has a basis, Locsin will issue a formal charge to be prepared by the Office of Treaties and Legal Affairs.

Now that President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the investigation, a hearing panel will be formed to report to the Board of Foreign Service Administration.

It will go through the DFA secretary, who will recommend the president on the steps to be taken against Marichu Mauro.

The DFA was given 15 days to report to the Presidential Management Staff.

The DFA stood as the complainant against Mauro and promised justice for the abused maid.

According to Locsin, financial assistance of P200,000 has been sent to the maid, and counseling has been offered.
