House helpers in Metro Manila to get P20 salary increase

Starting next year, household helpers in Metro Manila and low-income workers in Caraga will see a boost in their salaries following wage hikes approved by the local wage authorities, confirmed by the Labor Department last Friday.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) declared that on December 13, 2023, the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) approved the pay directives from the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPB) in Caraga and the National Capital Region (NCR).

On December 5, 2023, the Caraga Region’s RTWPB independently enacted Wage Order No. RXIII-18. This order boosts the minimum daily wage by P20 for all sectors when it takes effect, with a further P15 increase set for May 1, 2024.

“This will bring the daily minimum wages in the region to P385 upon implementation of the two tranches,” the DOLE said.

The Caragas RTWPB took the initiative to release Wage Order No RXIIIDW04, which raises kasambahays’ minimum wage by P1000. Now, household helpers in the area will earn P5000 a month.

On December 12, 2023, the RTWPB of NCR independently released Wage Order No. NCR-DW-04, upping the monthly base pay for house helpers by P500, making it P6,500.

DOLE noted that the wage orders from Caraga’s RTWPB will be out on December 16, 2023, and will kick in 15 days after they’re out, or starting January 1, 2024.

The salary directive for NCR household helpers will be released on December 18, 2023, and will start on January 3, 2024.

“The new rate for workers in the private sector translates to a 10% increase from the prevailing daily minimum wage rate in Caraga Region and results in a comparable 23% increase in wage-related benefits covering the 13th-month pay, service incentive leave (SIL), and social security benefits such as SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG,” the DOLE said.

Wage Order No. RXIII-18 is set to help 65,681 people in Caraga who earn the least. Also, about 132,217 workers with regular pay higher than minimum wage might see their earnings go up due to companies fixing uneven wage issues.

The DOLE reports that the pay raise for house helpers in CARAGA and NCR will help about 256,476 of them, with around 57%, or 146,202, living with their employers.
