Some hospitals, LGUs record more COVID-19 cases

The number of COVID-19 cases at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) continues to increase.

PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said 143 COVID-19 cases were admitted among them this Monday, from just 125 on Friday.

He said this is equivalent to 60 percent bed occupancy. Most cases are moderate to severe, and some are critical.

They continue to send samples for genome sequencing, especially since 21 cases of Delta variants have been recorded at PGH.

He also said that they had increased the level of the personal protective equipment of health workers to avoid more contagious variants.

According to Del Rosario, the number has been consistent in their monitoring over the past 10 days.

The hospital has ensured that for now, there are still enough beds and some equipment.

“The maximum po ng aming COVID-19 beds ay 250. Sa ngayon, sapat naman po. May mga oxygen po kaming naibibigay sa mga pasyente, high flow oxygen. Ang assumption po namin, hindi na namin hinihintay kung ano ang sasabihin ng Philippine Genome Center, ngayon po ang mga bagong admissions ng PGH, ina-assume na po naming sila ay Delta variant,” said Del Rosario.

Meanwhile, San Juan City is already feeling the effects of the COVID-19 surge.

Mayor Francis Zamora said there are now 181 COVID-19 cases in the city from just 60 to 80 cases in the past 2 months.

The good news, he said, is that there are no severe or critical cases in the city, and everyone is in a quarantine facility.

Meanwhile, half of the cities and provinces across the Philippines have recorded an increase in COVID-19 cases, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.

The official has not yet identified the areas where the cases have risen. Still, before that, the government has subjected some areas in the country to enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) – the strictest community quarantine. The ECQ will begin on August 6 in Metro Manila.

Apart from being more contagious, the viral load of a person affected by the Delta variant is also said to be higher, so the previous 15 -minute exposure to be considered close contact has changed.
