High COVID-19 death rate possibly due to inability to get treatment

The 1.76 percent case fatality rate or percent of COVID-19 deaths is said to be the highest since April.

ABS-CBN News Data Analytics Head Edson Guido explained that even though the trend is down in other areas, there are still at risk of health care and intensive care unit utilization rates.

Therefore, it is possible that COVID-19 patients in these areas have not been treated properly.

Also, one of the visible reasons is the seemingly slow vaccination, especially among senior citizens.

“Kung titingnan ang vaccine data, less than 800,000 ang seniors na fully vaccinated. So lumalabas, less than 10 percent pa lang ng seniors ang nabigyan ng complete dose,” said Guido.

If there is anything good about the Department of Health (DOH) data released, it was 47,000 active cases on Wednesday, the lowest since May 26.

For almost a month now, the number of new COVID-19 cases has dropped to less than 7,000.

But Guido warned that the country’s 5,400 average daily cases should not be fully complied with.

High COVID-19 death rate possibly due to inability to get treatment

“‘Yong trend na nakikita natin, it’s reversible any time. At our current level, hindi pa rin maganda na nasa 5,000 cases pa rin tayo… they have improved pero mataas pa rin ang numbers na nakikita,” said Guido.

In Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines have the most average daily cases.

Unlike 3 other countries with an upward trend, the number of cases in the Philippines has plateaued.

But there seems to be a similarity between the trend of the Philippines and the trend of Indonesia, which should be avoided, especially after a few months of nailing 5,000 cases when the number of people falling ill in Indonesia suddenly jumped due to the Delta variant.

Despite seeing an upward trend in Malaysia and Thailand, the COVID-19 deaths among them remains lower.

“We could partially explain this also by the current percentage ng mga taong fully vaccinated na. If tingnan natin sa datos, Malaysia, 9 percent na ng population ang fully vaccinated. Thailand it’s at 4.4 percent at sa Pilipinas, 2.7 percent pa lang,” said Guido.
