Hacker pretends to be employee to access victim’s bank account

Bank account hackers almost victimized a man after someone called him and identified him as a bank’s anti-fraud department staff member.

In a report by Tina Panganiban-Perez on GMA News “24 Oras” on Thursday, Joms Donaire said that someone called him and identified himself as a banker for added security to his account after the recent hacking of several bank accounts.

But Donaire allegedly had doubts about the demands on his information.

According to Donaire, his account was not hacked.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cybercrime Division, on the other hand, warned that one of the signs is that the person in question is a fraudster when he pretends to be a banker and will rush the victim to provide information about his account.

“Ang unang-una ho kasing telltale sign na bogus ho ‘yung tumatawag sa inyo at nagpe-pretend lang na representative coming from the bank is ‘yung may sense of urgency. Sasabihin nila na may nagta-transact under your account,” said Atty. Vic Lorenzo, NBI Cybercrime Division chief.

“Kapag humingi ng account information ‘yung tumawag sa inyo, at the same time ‘yung mga password niyo or OTP (one time pin), scammer ho ‘yung kausap ninyo,” he explained.

According to Lorenzo, the public should not give other people their account information, including passwords and OTP codes.

“Kapag namimili ka online, basic principle lang ho niyan, if it is too good to be true, it is not true. Kapag nagmamadali, masyadong malaki ang discount, hindi ho totoo ‘yan,” he said.
