5 given tickets for violating curfew at Convenient community pantry

Five people were ticketed by the Quezon City Task Force Discipline after lining up earlier than 5 am at the Maginhawa community pantry.

They were given a week to pay a P300 fine to City Hall. But according to Mayor Joy Belmonte, she will pay the fine.

“An ordinance has been violated. OVRs have been issued so the penalty must be paid. But taking into consideration the circumstances they are in, I will be the one to pay the penalty in their behalf with strict warning not to repeat the violation,” she said.

The city enforces 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. curfew hours after Metro Manila and neighboring provinces were subjected to modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until April 30.

“May curfew pa din naman tayo. Wala po tayong magagawa, ‘yan po guidelines ng MECQ, taga pagpatupad lang kami,” said Rannie Ludovica, head of QC Task Force Disiplina.

According to human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, LGUs should also consider whether to fine people who violate the curfew just because they line up early in the community pantry.

“Perhaps the mayor could waive or reconsider those kinds of penalties. Maybe they could just convert that into community service para hindi naman mahirap sa kanila ang penalty,” he said in ANC Headstart.

“It’s a bit sad to hear that people, who are lining up because obviously they have no choice, have to now pay up that amount of money which to them is a big amount of money.”
