Grandpa in Mandaluyong allegedly injected with different COVID-19 vaccine brands

“Lyza” fears for the safety of her 64-year-old husband, who was vaccinated in Mandaluyong City.

On her husband’s vaccination card, the AstraZeneca vaccine was first injected on May 13. But she was shocked when she saw the second dose given on July 22 was Sinovac.

“Kahit naman sino e magagalit, unang una ‘yung pasyente, post COVID, pangalawa senior citizen without informing e patient itself na mali ‘yung vaccine. Hindi siya nagtanong, hawak niya ‘yung waiver, hawak niya ‘yung vaccine card, hindi siya nagbasa kung ano ang ituturok, basta tinurok niya,” said “Lyza.”

Lyza’s husband is in good condition, but he is still being observed since he is a senior.

So Lyza asked the local government to investigate what happened.

According to a Mandaluyong City Health Office statement, it will be investigated why the vaccine brands were different.

However, due to the increasing number of cases of injection of other vaccines in the second dose, the second dose is considered for other vaccines injected, and there is no need to give an additional dose.

“It is well-worth noting that there has been a rising number of inadvertent administration of a different vaccine brand for the 2nd dose in the country. Due to these incidents, the DOH came out with its Advisory No. 64, which states: “If a different COVID-19 vaccine brand was administered as second dose, it shall be considered as the second dose of the previously administered COVID-19 vaccine. There is no need to provide any additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine,” said Dr. Alex Sta. Maria of Mandaluyong City Health Office.

The Department of Health is also investigating the incident, including two similar cases in Davao Region.

“Iniimbestigahan natin ito sa ngayon, what really happened. But based from our initial information na naibigay sa atin, mukhang talagang error ng health care worker at ito ay hindi naman talaga nila tinago, sabi nila they mistook the other vaccine for that vaccine na kailangan dapat iturok,” said Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.
