Gov’t security guard has P280-M in the bank; wife has P179-M – Ombudsman

Ombudsman Samuel Martires disclosed to the Senate Committee on Finance that there is a security guard in the government with money in the bank amounting to P280 million. In addition to this, his wife’s money is P179 million.

Martires made the disclosure when he attended the committee’s hearing this Tuesday, concerning the P4.781-billion budget he requested from the agency in 2023.

Martires mentioned about this multi-millionaire security when talking about the issue of corruption in the government.

“Kayo po ba ay maniniwala na merong isang empleyado na ang kaniyang item ay security guard. At ang kaniyang deposito sa bank ay P280 million for the past 21 years,” Martires said to the senators who are members of the committee.

(Can you believe that there is an employee whose item is a security guard? And his deposit in the bank is P280 million for the past 21 years.)

“At ang kanyang asawa for the past eight years o may deposito sa bank na P179 million? Security guard lang po ‘yung asawa,” he added.

(And his wife for the past eight years or has a bank deposit of P179 million? The husband is just a security guard.)

When asked which government agency the guard was assigned, Martires said they would just file the case here with the Sandiganbayan.

The committee approved and recommended that the Ombudsman’s requested funds be discussed in plenary.

In October 2020, a Bureau of Immigration  was among those being investigated by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) connected with the “Pastillas” scheme due to his possession of property worth up to P14 million even though his salary is only P10,000 per month.

The NBI Special Action Unit official said that the declared in his SALN (statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth) in 2018 that the total assets amounting to more than P14 million.

The  allegedly declared that he had bought a house worth P4.5 million, had jewelry, two SUV vehicles, and traveled abroad eight times a year, including Japan, America, and Europe.
