‘Florita’ leaves P33.7-M worth of damage to infrastructure, P3.4-M to agriculture

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the recent typhoon “Florita” has caused millions of dollars in the Philippines — while the affected population has swelled to 71,468 people.

According to the NDRRMC, on Friday, the amount of damage caused by the bad weather in the entire country reached P33,700,000:

  • Ilocos Region (P10,200,000)
  • Cagayan Valley (P23,500,000)

Regarding the agriculture sector, the amount of production loss or damage in Region 1 has reached P3,414,672.

It is said that 324 farmers and fishermen are now affected, which covers 633 hectares of partially damaged crops. The volume of production loss will now reach 223 metric tons.

In addition to infrastructure and agriculture, as many as 33 homes were damaged by Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

P6.32 million worth of aid has been provided so far for families affected in Regions 1, 2, 5, and Cordillera.

Those affected were given family kits, hygiene kits, and food packs.

“As of August 25, more than P4.4 million worth of food and non-food items were already sent [by the Department of Social Welfare and Development] to affected localities, with the bulk of assistance worth P3.1 million delivered in Region II,” said the DSWD in a statement this Thursday.

“The rest were provided in Regions I, III, CALABARZON, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).”

Meanwhile, three people were killed while four others were injured due to the ravages of typhoon Florita, according to the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The victims were identified as a 63-year-old from Cagayan province and a 56-year-old from Pinukpuk, Kalinga when the tree fell.

Another 32-year-old who died due to drowning in Bato, Camarines Sur, is being verified.

It also appears in the data from the NDRRMC that 11,953 families, or equivalent to 47,169 individuals, have been affected by the typhoon.

As many as 10,355 people had to be evacuated. About 6,623 of them were taken to evacuation centers, while others gathered temporarily with relatives or friends.

It is reported that typhoon Florita also damaged 44 roads and 14 bridges.

According to the NDRRMC, the DSWD and the local government have allocated more than P4.8 million worth of assistance.
