A high ranking Abu Sayyaf leader and four cohorts were all sentenced to life in prison after they were found guilty of the 2008 kidnapping of a Filipino female nurse.
Convicted was leader Khair Mundos and his four accomplices – Ashra Jawari, Ellel, Bensar Indama and Ermiahe Achmad.
In a 31-page decision the judge in the case found the men guilty beyond a reasonable doubt on the charge of kidnapping and illegal detention.
The decision noted that “the court sentenced each of them to suffer the penalty of reclusion perpetua without possibility of parole.”
The nurse in the 2008 kidnapping was held for three months until a ransom of three million pesos was paid for her release.
The court ordered the men to pay the nurse the sum of three million pesos as legal, moral and exemplary damages.
The judge in the decision said that Mundos carried a bounty of 1.2 million pesos and a $500,000 bounty under the United States Reward for Justice system. Mundos was arrested in June 2014 in Parañaque City.
Bensar Indama, the young brother of Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama, was arrested in Basilan in 2012.
Officials said the men would all be transported to Taguig to be detained at the New Bilibid Prison.
