A female scientist from Davao invented “healthy beer” because it contains probiotics and durian powder.
Kriza Faye Calumba’s “ale beer” is the result of her two-year study in America. Calumba is an assistant professor in the Department of Food Science and Chemistry at the University of the Philippines Mindanao.
In 2017, Calumba received a Fullbright-CHED scholarship to study at Louisiana State University in the US. There she made “ale beer” with 4.39 percent alcohol content and probiotics immobilized by durian powder.
Calumba explained that this is called healthy beer because of the presence of probiotics that are good for gastrointestinal health.
She used durian powder to make probiotic bacteria alive.
This research project by Calumba was honored at the annual conference of International Food Technologist Inc. and won third place at the Biotechnology Division Poster in Chicago, Illinois.
“Never stop learning kay ang imong natun-an magamit sab upang makatabang sa uban,” she said.

‘Mañanita’ protests vs. anti-terror bill continue despite PNP threat
Protesters at the University of the Philippines – Diliman and other parts of the Philippines continued their protest to junk the anti-terrorism law as the Philippines celebrates it 122nd Independence Day, Friday.
PNP spokesperson Brig-Gen. Bernard Banac said yesterday that the police would disperse the protesters, especially as they pose a health threat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At exactly 9:00 am, groups and individuals opposing the anti-terrorism measure gathered at University Ave.
“At present, a number of youth and students are already being ruthlessly targeted and vilified for exercising their right to protest abuses, incompetence, and unequal application of the law,” said Kabataan party-list Rep. Sarah Elago in a statement.
“Ito po ang nagtulak para sa mga kabataaan, mga iskolar ng bayan at mga estudyante upang magpanday ng mga pahayag, ng pagkakaisa at sumama sa mga pagkilos ngayon sa kabila ng pandemya,” she added.
The theme of the protest seemed to be a “mañanita” birthday celebration as their way of mocking NCRPO director Debold Sinas, who was not punished for violating the government’s directive against mass gatherings.
