‘Fake news’ caused overcrowding at national ID registration in Bulacan: PSA

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said “fake news” caused a large crowd at a national ID registration area in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

PSA officials were forced to suspend the registration early because the number of people exceeded the expected 1,600 registrants and social distancing was already difficult to impose.

PSA Assistant Secretary Rosalinda Bautista told Unang Hirit that “fake news” on cash distribution and the day being the last day for national ID registration caused people to crowd at the mall.

“Ang nangyari nagkaroon ng misinformation. May nagbalita na may magbibigay ng pera doon at huling araw na ng pagpaparehistro. Dahil doon sa mga balitang iyon, kumalat na fake news, kaya nagdagsaan ang mga tao,” she said.

(There was misinformation. Somebody said the cash would be given, and it was already the last day for registration. Because of those fake news, people swarmed the place.)

Bautista said around 4,000 people showed up in the area.

The local government of San Jose del Monte and Bautista is already probing the incident to identify the source of the disinformation.

She said the national ID registration continues but reminded the public that only those who have appointments should go to the venue.

Bautista said the place and the time for the appointment schedule are sent to registrants via text message.

As of May 13, a total of 849,862  have registered to national ID online for Step 1 of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys).

According to PSA, around 34 million have so far completed Step 1 via a house-to-house collection of demographic data in priority provinces.

Step 1 of the national ID registration requires 10 demographic information — name, gender, birthplace and birth date, blood type, address, , marital status, cellphone number, and email address of registrants.

Meanwhile, for Step 2, the registrant’s biometric data (iris scan, fingerprints, and photograph) would be taken at PhilSys registration centers. The PSA earlier said there are about 4.6 million who completed the second stage of PhilSys.
